SUMMER 2010 IS NEARLY OVER

It's hard to believe that summer 2010 is coming to a close, especially since
the weather was so uncooperative.   It hardly felt like summer at all.
Needless to say, we didn't have very many warm days this year (until the last
weekend of September, that is), and now it looks like Fall is definitely upon us.

Be that as it may, the pool is still open and will remain open until the last week of October,
or until the outdoor temperature dips to the point where nobody is coming anymore.
That's when we'll turn off the heater and reduce our chemicals to minimum levels.
FYI - It costs us about $40 per day to heat and chlorinate our pool when we're open,
and less than $10 per day when we're closed!   So keeping the pool open when there's
nobody there would be financially unwise.  We'll keep you posted.

In other news...  we are replacing our 11 year old heater in the next couple of weeks.
It has been plagued with starter problems, and leaks, and I'm afraid it's time to
lay it to rest.  The cost of a new heater is about $3000.

The new heater, coupled with our newly resurfaced driveway ($4000), and the
federally mandated (bogus) VGB anti-entrapment auto shutoff drain gizmo ($1300),
has impacted the budget of our little non-profit club more that we anticipated this year.
A full roster next year should put us back on track.  We don't anticipate any increase in
dues in 2011, and may even bring back the "early-bird" discount to boost our
bank account back to normal levels PRIOR to the end of 2010.
Watch your e-mail for renewal info.

LIFEGUARDS ARE DONE

Beginning this week (Sep 27) our lifeguard schedule will come to an end.  Parents are expected to WATCH THEIR CHILDREN.  If you're not in the pool with them, then pull a chair up to the edge of the pool, and don't be afraid to keep an eye on other people's children, as well.  Wouldn't it be a great world if we all looked out for each other?

Also, please note that all rules and procedures are still in effect when there is no lifeguard on duty - guest fees must still be paid, horseplay in and out of the pool is not allowed, no unorthodox diving, no eating in or near the pool, toys and games must be put away, and be sure to check the bathrooms after your kids use them.

Don Zirilli's 5 COMMANDMENTS FOR A HAPPY POOL...
1) Pay what you owe.
2) Don't do or allow any DANGEROUS activity - in or out of the pool.
3) Don't do or allow any DESTRUCTIVE activity.
4) Clean up your messes - throw away trash, put away toys, replace furniture.
5) Don't do anything that annoys others around you.

Margie's BONUS 6th COMMANDMENT...
6) Leave it better than you found it.

Be safe!

BOARD NIGHT OUT II

October 5 marked our second semi-annual Board Night Out event, at which our Board members (and spouses) get to spend an evening together (without discussing the pool) over dinner and whatever fun entertainment option they choose, as a perk for their voluntary service on the LRI Board of Directors.

Our last Night Out took place at Campo de Bocce, where Board members enjoyed a rousing game of Bocce (guys vs gals - the gals won 12-5) and dinner afterwards.  For BNO-II we chose to go to Strike! in Cupertino, for some bowling excitement.  No teams this time - it was every man/woman for themself.  High scorer for the first game was Curt Stavang (119) and for our second game Board President Don Zirilli (182).  "It was pure luck.  I haven't bowled in 15 years!" said Zirilli.  Having started the game with 3 gutter-balls in a row, and ending with 5 strikes in a row - yep that's pure luck.  The games were punctuated with appetizers and pitchers of beer, and followed with dinner.

A good time was had by all.  (Absent were Board member Ruth Stevens, and her husband, Joe.  Hope they can make the next one).

Here are some photos of the event.

BOARD NIGHT OUT (one)

Once a year, the members of the LRI Board of Directors and their spouses are
treated to a special night out on the town, as a "thank you" for  their volunteer
service on the Board.  (Board service has its "perks"). This year our Board night out
took place at Campo de Bocce in Los Gatos.  The evening began with drinks and
appetizers, followed by a lively game of Bocce - the guys vs the gals.  For the record,
the guys put up a valiant effort, but were soundly defeated by the gals 12 to 5!

Dinner was great - fine Italian food, wine, and a good time was had by all.
It was a great way to kick off the new year.

Front row:
Terry Stavang, Dean Chu, Angela Boynton, Terrance Boynton.
Back Row: Curt Stavang,

Absent were Michele and Andreas Kraemer.

and since it's been 10 years since the last one - it's time.
